Why we practice Asana?

Asanas, or yoga poses, are well-known aspect of yoga practice. They are physical postures designed to promote strength, flexibility, balance, and awareness. Here are some key reasons why we practice asanas and their significance:

  • Physical well-being: Asanas help improve physical health by stretching and strengthening muscles, increasing flexibility, enhancing joint mobility, and improving overall body alignment. Regular practice can contribute to improved posture, increased energy levels, and enhanced overall physical fitness.
  • Mental and emotional balance: Asanas are not just about the physical aspect; they also have a profound impact on mental and emotional well-being. By focusing on the breath and the present moment during the practice, asanas promote mindfulness and help calm the mind. They can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while promoting mental clarity and emotional stability.
  • Body-mind connection: Asanas facilitate a deeper connection between the body and the mind. By paying attention to the sensations and feedback from the body during the practice, practitioners develop a heightened awareness of their physical and mental state. This increased body-mind connection can lead to a greater sense of self-awareness and self-acceptance.
  • Energy flow and vitality: Asanas are believed to stimulate the flow of vital energy, often referred to as prana, throughout the body. When the energy flows smoothly and freely, it promotes vitality, balance, and overall well-being. Certain asanas specifically target and activate different energy centers or channels in the body, promoting a harmonious flow of energy.
  • Preparation for meditation: Asanas prepare the body and mind for meditation. By releasing physical tension and restlessness, asanas help create a more comfortable and stable posture for sitting meditation. The practice of asanas also cultivates discipline, focus, and concentration, which are beneficial qualities for meditation.
  • Spiritual growth: While asanas primarily focus on the physical and mental aspects, they can also be a gateway to spiritual growth. What is Atmamehr’s view of Openness and Happinnes?

According to yogic philosophy, the natural state of our being is happiness and love, often referred to as Ananda. Ananda represents a state of pure bliss and joy that resides within each individual. However, tensions, stresses, and negative thought patterns act as obstacles that prevent us from directly experiencing this innate state of well-being.

Yoga, as both a philosophy and a practice, offers a holistic approach to address these obstacles and reconnect with our true nature. Through a combination of physical, mental, and spiritual practices, yoga aims to dissolve the tensions and blockages that inhibit our experience of joy and love.

“Eternal happiness belongs to the intelligent – not to others –

who realize in their hearts Him who is one

the controller and the indwelling Self of all beings

and who makes the one form manifold”. – Katha Upanishad

Physical practices such as asanas (yoga postures) help release tension and promote flexibility and strength in the body. Pranayama (breath control techniques) calms the mind and enhances the flow of vital energy, while meditation cultivates inner peace and awareness. As we engage in these practices regularly, we begin to unravel the layers of conditioning and stress that have accumulated over time. With each breath and movement, we peel away the layers of tension, revealing the radiant essence of our being—the inherent bliss that is Ananda.

Through yoga, we not only alleviate physical discomfort and mental agitation but also tap into a deeper sense of happiness, peace, and contentment. As the obstacles are removed, we come to realize that happiness is not something to be pursued externally but a natural state of being that arises from within.  In this way, yoga serves as a pathway to rediscover our inherent joy and love, allowing us to live more fully and authentically in alignment with our true nature.

Happiness is a fundamental aspect of personal progress and development. It boosts energy, enabling individuals to face and overcome challenges more effectively. When people are happy, they have a clearer vision, which helps them set and pursue higher goals. This drive and clarity further fuel their progress and sense of fulfillment.

Moreover, happiness is not just a means to an end but one of the primary goals of life. According to yogic scriptures like the Upanishads, living happily is considered a birthright of every human being. These ancient texts emphasize that true happiness comes from self-realization and living in harmony with one’s true nature. By aligning with this inner truth, individuals can experience lasting contentment and joy.

Mantra is a sacred word, sound or phrase, often in Sanskrit. Mantra is known at wide variety of spiritual traditions such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Yoga. The word mantra is derived from two Sanskrit roots; manas meaning ‘mind’ and tra meaning ‘tool’. As such, mantras are considered to be “tools of thought,” used as a means of harnessing and focusing the mind. Mantra can be understood as any sound, word or phrase that alters consciousness through meaning, tone, rhythm, or physical vibration. What is Mantra Yoga?

Mantra yoga is a type of yoga that uses mantras to awaken the Self and deepen the meditative aspects of yoga practice. Mantra yoga is a science of engaging the mind through focusing on sound, duration and number of repetitions. Repetition of the mantras is a means to get closer to the divinity within, and it creates positive vibrations that benefits in many ways. Mantra yoga may also be referred to as Japa yoga. Japa is a Sanskrit word for repeating mantras. In Japa Yoga to keep count of repetitions using mala are popular. Mala is a strand of beads used for keeping count during Japa yoga. Mala is a Sanskrit word meaning “garland” or “impurity.” Mala is usually made of 108 beads.

Chanting and meditating on mantras calms the mind, brings focus and is great for controlling the breath. Mantra yoga is highly beneficial to the practitioner as it improves overall health and mental stability.

Mantra yoga can be practiced in three ways. The first way is called baikhari, wherein the mantra is chanted in a loud manner. This type of chanting is advantageous for removing unwanted thoughts from the mind in order to make the meditation process easier. The second method of chanting is called upanshu, in which the mantra is chanted in a very low voice that only the practitioner can hear. In this type deep vibrations spread out to the mind, body and environment. This vibration has a healing quality. The third method is chanting the mantra silently to one’s self or mental repetition of mantras. This is called manasic and it is used by advanced practitioners.

Why we practice Mantra Yoga?

  • Mind Focus and Concentration
  • Calming the Mind
  • Spiritual Growth and Connection
  • Positive Affirmations
  • Healing and Vibrational Energy
  • Community and Shared Practice
  • Tradition and Cultural Heritage

Mantra Yoga involves the repetition of specific sounds, words, or phrases, which helps to focus the mind. This practice can improve concentration and bring a sense of clarity and calmness. The repetitive nature of mantras can help in reducing mental chatter and distractions, allowing for a more centered and focused state of mind.

Chanting mantras can induce a state of relaxation and peace. The vibrations produced by the mantras can have a soothing effect on the mind, helping to alleviate stress and anxiety. This calming effect can lead to a greater sense of inner peace and emotional stability.

Mantras are often considered sacred sounds that carry spiritual significance. Practicing Mantra Yoga can deepen one’s spiritual practice and foster a sense of connection with the divine or the higher self. It can be a means of spiritual awakening and growth, enhancing one’s sense of purpose and meaning in life.

Many mantras contain positive affirmations or messages that can uplift the practitioner’s mood and outlook on life. Repeating these positive statements can help to reprogram the subconscious mind, promoting a more positive and optimistic mindset.

Mantras are believed to carry specific vibrational frequencies that can influence the body and mind. Certain mantras are thought to have healing properties, promoting physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The vibrations produced during chanting can help to align and balance the body’s energy centers, or chakras.

Mantra Yoga can be practiced individually or in a group setting. Chanting mantras in a group can create a sense of community and shared purpose. The collective energy of a group chanting together can enhance the overall experience and create a powerful sense of unity and connection.
